Remembering Chris Green

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing away of Chris Green, one of SQW's most long standing, respected and admired people. After a remarkably healthy and active life, Chris became ill in the middle of 2017, and he passed away in February 2018. For a period of over 30 years, he had been a vital figure in the life of SQW. When the firm was first established in Cambridge he was one of its first employees. He went on to become the Managing Director of SQW, to lead it through a substantial period of growth, and then to become the first Chief Executive of the newly created SQW Group (when SQW joined with Oxford Innovation).

His professional life spanned a wide range of assignments across the UK and internationally. His UK work largely focussed around knowledge-based economic growth and spatial planning, particularly in Cambridge and the greater south east of England, latterly in Oxfordshire and most recently Bristol-Bath. Chris was also a great advocate of working on economic development issues abroad. He spent several years in Hong Kong for SQW and on a range of assignments in other parts of Asia and Africa.

Chris was a remarkable character. He was able to provide great insight and vision, alongside a fierce attention to detail. He did so in a very calm and unassuming way that belied a tremendous work ethic and steely determination. He was an extraordinarily generous colleague, always willing to give guidance on challenging issues or to find time to help others out.

Sir Michael Lyons, Chairman of SQW Group, commented:

"Chris had a fantastic combination of qualities which generated huge respect from colleagues and clients. Chris' style, modesty, generosity, imagination and rigour are among the many things that he passed on, by example, to others. He will be very sadly missed by all of us at SQW and Oxford Innovation."
