Rapid Evidence Assessment: Exploring the impact of non-statutory non-clinical one-to-one mental health interventions on young people in secondary school
In September 2023, the Youth Futures Foundation was awarded £15m from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) to deliver Building Futures, an early intervention programme delivering and evaluating mentoring support for secondary school students at risk of becoming NEET (not in employment, education or training) when they leave compulsory education.
To inform the design and delivery of the Building Futures programme, Youth Futures have commissioned several Rapid Evidence Assessments (REAs) which use a well-defined process to identify relevant reports and papers and then analyse and summarise the most relevant.
In 2024, we undertook one of these REAs, assessing the evidence on how mentoring interventions can support young people aged 11-16 to develop skills, knowledge and attributes that improve their employment prospects later on.
Now, we have been commissioned to undertake a further REA exploring the impact of non-statutory non-clinical one-to-one mental health interventions on young people in secondary school. The findings from this REA will help Youth Futures integrate mental health and wellbeing activities into the holistic package of support provided by the Building Futures programme.
The REA will be completed over the summer with our partner BPSR, and will involve interviews with key experts in the field of adolescent mental health and wellbeing.
