Support to the Regional Innovation Review
Client: University of Manchester
The University of Manchester has “almost 7,000 academic and research staff” contributing to a depth and breadth of expertise across three Faculties: Biology, Medicine and Health; Humanities; and Science and Engineering. It is seeking to enhance its regional innovation impacts through the establishment of Unit M which will transform how the University partners with startups, scale ups and industry to strengthen the local innovation system.
In 2024, SQW was commissioned by the University of Manchester to support its internal Regional Innovation Review. This included a data driven assessment of the University’s business-facing research strengths – both in terms of existing areas of excellence where the University was seeking to ‘stay ahead’ and those emerging areas of strength where there was a clear or plausible ‘pathway to excellence’ over the next few years.
SciVal was the primary source of data used for the assessment. This includes metrics for the scale and growth of academic output across disciplines, several proxy measures for the quality of this output, and wider metrics on collaboration, both internationally and with industry. The data driven assessment was complemented by 13 consultations with strategic leads at the university.
