Qualifications: MSc International Development (University of Edinburgh), MA Economics and Management (University of St Andrews)

I joined SQW at the end of August 2022 just after finishing my dissertation focusing on youth unemployment and the digital economy in South Africa. Before this, I was interested in health and education economics, and impact evaluation. Looking for jobs, I knew that I wanted to use my quantitative and qualitative skills and pursue the interests I’d developed at university. The role at SQW has allowed me to do all of this, as well as develop new skills and knowledge around different fields.

The project-based nature of work in SQW means that each day is different. For example, I have conducted interviews with company directors for our evaluation of a Be the Business programme, and also analysed survey responses from Venture Capital firms for a project with the British Business Bank. I’ve also worked across SQW’s other areas of expertise including undertaking a literature review on careers guidance in Germany, and analysing data for a project supporting internships in Scotland. One of the best things about SQW is knowing that, even as one of the most junior members of the team, the work I do is directly contributing to  our project outputs and, consequentially, the work of our clients.

As an RC, I have access to training sessions tailored to joiners at this level. These range from interview techniques to training in MaxQDA, ArcGIS, and statistics. My personal development is further supported by my RC mentor. This is a key point of contact for every new incoming RC to seek guidance. More importantly, the culture in SQW is incredibly open and welcoming. Everyone is happy to lend a hand and answer questions.

As part of the team at SQW, we can also explore volunteering opportunities through the charity committee or using the two days of volunteering leave we have. Being based in the Edinburgh office, I am lucky to have easy access to lovely walks. However, and while I enjoy working in the office, I also value the flexibility I have to work remotely and at flexible times around our core hours. Overall, I have learnt a great deal from working at SQW. It is a great environment where colleagues encourage you to be curious and you feel like you’re part of the team from day one.
