Location: Edinburgh

Qualifications: MSc Public Policy (University of Strathclyde), MA Politics (University of Edinburgh)

I joined SQW in September 2024, having graduated from the University of Strathclyde with an MSc in Public Policy earlier that year. SQW was attractive because the work directly draws upon the skills I developed at university – to evaluate government policies across a range of sectors, to assess and develop interventions made in the public, private and third sectors, and to actively monitor and collect data relevant to these project areas. The Research Consultant role at SQW is similar to working on multiple dissertation projects at the same time, with each project having a real-world impact and being purposeful in meeting the needs of various clients that require input from an independent consultancy.

SQW has expertise across policy areas and disciplines, from education and health to innovation and spatial development. As a Research Consultant I have been encouraged to explore all areas and find out where my interest lies. This flexible approach means that the work I deliver is diverse and varied. I have undertaken analysis of survey responses to understand the financial needs of growing businesses in Ireland, reviewed literature to inform Skills Development Scotland about the education and employment requirements to support renewable energy transitions, and drawn up models to help charities measure and pitch their operations.

The open and supportive environment at SQW means that I can ask questions and propose ideas to any of my colleagues, and the holistic Research Consultant training programme has prepared me for performing a range of tasks. For example, I attended training at each of our SQW offices, learning about how qualitative and quantitative methods contribute to SQW’s work, as well as ways to understand, analyse and present findings.

There are plenty of opportunities to learn at SQW – for example there are monthly meetings across all areas of expertise, and a group to reflect on our experience as Research Consultants so that we can help each other with any challenges we face. Overall, I find the office environment very collaborative and friendly, which helps me to enjoy participating in a range of projects and to be excited about upcoming opportunities.
