A Science and Innovation Audit for the D2N2 LEP area

Over Summer 2016, SQW provided expert support to the Midlands Engine in delivering a Science and Innovation Audit (SIA). The purpose of an SIA is to map local research and innovation strengths, and to identify how investment in science and innovation can stimulate productivity growth. Following the publication of the Midlands Engine SIA, SQW was commissioned to undertake a follow-on piece of work, deepening and extending the findings of the SIA for the D2N2 LEP area.

The D2N2 SIA identified specific existing and emerging areas of science and innovation excellence that will contribute towards the strategic goal of boosting long-term productivity. The evidence base and the associated priority areas are designed to help inform both policy-makers and investors on D2N2's exciting science and innovation-led opportunities. It is also being used to help inform SQW's work to 'refresh' of the D2N2 Strategic Economic Plan.

Key research findings include:

  • Three Enabling Competencies characterise the LEP area economy due to the concentration of complementary research and innovation assets focused on: Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering; Digital Technologies and Data; and Systems Integration.
  • Four Market Priorities combine established world class strengths with significant scope for future growth and development: Next Generation Transport; Life Sciences and Healthcare; Future Food Processing; and Energy and Low Carbon.
