I joined SQW in August 2018 as a Managing Consultant. This is my second period within the SQW Group, having previously worked with Oxford Innovation (OI) as Regional Director for London & Thames Gateway. My career covers a number of different roles including being Managing Director of an £11m division of an engineering PLC, managing two innovation centres in Scotland, and running my own consultancy business in innovation, technology and manufacturing, and business development.

During my first 16 months with SQW I've been involved in a number of really interesting and economically important projects, largely consulting with stakeholders and beneficiaries, and writing case studies on the support received and resulting economic benefits. I've worked on the evaluation of parts of the Catapult network - including the High Value Manufacturing Catapult and the Digital and Satellite Applications Catapult - as well as the Aerospace Technology Institute and Be the Business's Mentoring for Growth programme.

Project work is not all about economic evaluation however. For example, I've worked on case studies of how UK-wide innovation infrastructures' design their business models, and helped North Ayrshire Council develop a strategy for a life sciences and processing sector industrial campus. I'm now starting work as part of the team investigating the market and economic importance to the UK of submarine fibre optic data cables.

More recently I am now splitting my time between SQW and OI, supporting the latter on business development and innovation projects UK-wide.

Outside of projects, I work with colleagues interested in innovation to investigate policy and actions relating to the ways innovation and enterprise contribute to economic and social prosperity. My particular interests are in business formation and growth, innovation infrastructure and productivity.

The Edinburgh team, SQW's most northerly office, is a relatively small but very friendly, supportive and welcoming group, centrally located in Scotland's capital, and within easy reach of shops, cafes and for our social occasions, something a bit stronger!
