Economic Impact of a Proposed Proton Beam Therapy Facility

Client: Commission for New Economy, Manchester

Proton Beam Therapy is a sophisticated radiotherapy that can be effective in treating a number of cancers while avoiding damage to surrounding tissues.  In 2010, the Department of Health announced its intention to establish a number of Proton Beam Therapy facilities in England.  The Christie NHS Foundation Trust in Manchester was invited to submit a proposal in a competitive process.

On behalf of the Manchester partners, the Commission for the New Economy commissioned SQW to assess the potential economic impact of such a facility for the Manchester City Region and for the North West to help make the case for locating the facility in Manchester. The impact analysis considered both the direct employment at the facility and the wider supply chain benefits of the facility.

The economic impact assessment was used as part of Manchester's successful application to the Department of Health, with the Christie chosen as one of only two locations for a Proton Beam Therapy facility in the UK.
