Graduate profile: Bo White

Name: Bo White
Job Title: Research Consultant
Location: Manchester
Degree: BA (Hons) Economics
University: University of Strathclyde

I joined SQW in November 2007, shortly after graduating with a 2:1 honours degree in Economics from the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow. During my university studies I found myself increasingly drawn to public sector economics, which led me to focus on areas such as regional economics, natural resource and environmental economics; and in particular, in economic policy and application. Whilst carrying out extensive research for my dissertation I became aware how important and influential consulting firms such as SQW are, in their capacity to drive the efficiency and effectiveness of the private sector in public sector activity. I selected SQW as my career choice, as I wanted a challenging and rewarding job within a growing company which possessed a strong reputation in the market. SQW ticked all these boxes, illustrated by the diverse range of projects, clients and sectors that they are involved with.

Since joining SQW I have worked on a variety of projects in the North West and further afield. In my opinion this is the best thing about the job – the ability to work on such a diverse range of projects with different people from all levels across the whole organisation. I am currently working on four projects, the North West Food and Farming Strategy evaluation, a food branding research project, a business support study and an evaluation of the Renew North Staffordshire housing strategy. Although this seems like a lot (and let there be no doubt, it’s a steep learning curve) I find it is the best way to learn. Each project is very different, which allows you to build up a variety of skills very quickly. You never find yourself doing the same thing all day, but it can be a juggling act from time to time!

Due to the nature of the work – both in terms of clients and projects – there is not really a typical day for a Research Consultant. My main tasks include reviewing and summarising relevant background documents and obtaining, designing and analysing quantitative and qualitative research tools. Research Consultants also tend to chip in wherever they are needed in a project – including helping to write proposals, conducting consultations and attending meetings, some of which are off-site.

In general, SQW is a very friendly place to work, albeit extremely hard working! I am following a flexible graduate programme with the intention of becoming a Consultant within two years. The programme encourages you to take control of your own career aspirations, and provides you with the opportunity to influence projects and get involved in assignments in which you are particularly interested.
