Qualifications: MA Political Science (British Politics and the State) (Birmingham), BA History & Politics (Sheffield)

I joined SQW’s London office in October 2017 after completing an MA in British Politics at the University of Birmingham. After covering a wide variety of topics in my studies, such as governing processes, migration policy and international political economy, I was keen to keep this variety in my work and SQW has allowed me to do so. In addition, working as a Research Consultant has given me the opportunity to apply the research and analytical skills I developed during my MA to projects which evaluate and analyse policies and programmes designed to improve society and the economy.

I have already been involved in both national and international projects that span across SQW's areas of expertise. This has included developing impact indicators for the European Institute of Innovation and Technology, an evaluation of the projects funded by the Careers and Enterprise Company and a consideration of the future of Birkbeck University’s Stratford campus. My work on projects has involved reviewing documents, collating and analysing data in both Excel and SPSS, carrying out consultations and shadowing senior members of the team at client meetings and workshops. As the company has around 40 staff, you quickly get to know everyone. I work closely with both junior and senior colleagues and it is a really friendly and welcoming team.

Training and development is important to the firm and the Research Consultant Development Programme provides the structure for this. I have fortnightly catch-ups with my Research Consultant mentor to discuss progress and have attended various internal training sessions. These sessions have covered aspects of the research process, such as literature reviews, consultations and survey design, as well as technical software, such as SmartSurvey and ArcGIS Pro. Already, the graduate programme has increased both my confidence and skills, meaning I am able to make valuable contributions to the projects I am involved in.
